Moissanite

Here at the Northwoods Goldsmith, we pride ourselves on the ethical and sustainable sourcing of gemstones and minerals, which is why we carry such a broad array of moissanite jewelry.

Moissanite is a colorless, created gemstone that that has dispersion 2.4 times higher than diamond, a greater refractive index than diamond, and double refraction on the upper pavilion facets for astonishing fire. On the Mohs Hardness Scale, moissanite register at a 9.5, making them harder than rubies, and almost as hard as diamonds. Finally, at a carat for carat value, moissanite are significantly more affordable than both mined and created diamonds.

Moissanite is silicon carbide, first discovered in 1893 by the French chemist Henri Moissan while investigating rock samples from a meteor deposit in Canyon Diablo, Arizona. The crystalline structure of silicon carbide is made of strong covalent bonds similar to that of diamonds, making it capable of withstanding incredible pressure.

In its natural form, moissanite is exceedingly rare, found only in a few samples of upper mantle rock and in meteorites that originated beyond our solar system. Moissanite gemstones are a relatively new addition to the jewelry market, having only been commercially available since 1998. All moissanite are lab-grown, meaning that every gemstone is high quality, conflict-free and environmentally sustainable.
